Ubiquiti EdgeRouter™ X SFP – Teardown

September 10, 2017 by peter

I recently got a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter™ X SFP which has a really impressive feature set (quite close to “Enterprise routers” by Cisco or Juniper).

But what is under the hood of such a small device?

The processor is coverd by a heat sink glued to the package. I did not take this off, because I actually plan to still use the router for a while.
So I don’t know what is a the heart of the router, but the other components are identifiable:

  • 256 Megabyte SLC-NAND by Spansion (2 Gb, x8, -40-85 °C industrial grade): S34ML02G200TFI000
  • 256 Megabyte DDR3-RAM by Nanya (128Mb x 16, 1.35 V, 0-90 °C commercial grade): NT5CC128M16IP-DI
  • Atheros RGMII/SGMII Transceiver (PHY): AR8033-AL1A
  • a few Unisonic P-MOS transistors (probably for POE): UT4421G
  • 2x Dual-Port 100/1000 Base-TX magnetics: Magtek G50206SNG
  • 1x Single-Port magnetic: FPE LY24102SN (i could not find a datasheet or any specs for this component)
  • MXIC 25L1608E -> probably an EEPROM?
  • There are probably two switched power supplies on the board (at the two inductor coils), but I could not identify the model or brand of the controller ICs.

The back is rather unspectacular: a lot of discrete SMD components (mostly capacitors, resistors and transistors).
